For the past few years, the second graders have come out to visit the apiary. Normally, I set up a screened tent with a small colony inside and the students gather around the "veil" for a close up of the colony.
I greatly enjoy bringing the students so close to the bees. While they wonder how often I get stung, they can see that bees can be gentle and the experience of watching the bees a wonder.
We're going to bring a different stingless view of the bees this year, one that doesn't involve an exciting bus drive up our lane - a video of a hive inspection. We need only a warm day to put that together.
